Creating soulful vibes
About me
Jacob Mills is a drummer, producer, and photographer driven by rhythm, light, and emotion. Based in Brisbane, he moves between performance, recording, and visual storytelling crafting work that bridges precision and feeling.
Behind the drums, Jacob’s style draws from indie, soul, and rock grooves that serve the song but carry his distinct pulse. In the studio, he brings that same cinematic sensitivity to production and engineering, shaping sound and image as parallel expressions of energy and tone.
As part of QUT’s Vermilion Records, Jacob has contributed as a producer, recording engineer, and live sound technician — working across projects that span from intimate solo artists to full-band productions. His time with Vermilion has sharpened his technical versatility and collaborative instincts, reinforcing his reputation as a dependable and creative force in the studio.
From his work with Elsewhere and The Lost Heads Club to his expanding portfolio of artist photography, Jacob’s creative practice thrives on collaboration — building trust, translating ideas, and finding beauty in both chaos and control.

Vermilion Records – Production, Engineering & Collaboration
At Vermilion, I’ve worked across recording, mixing, and live sound engineering. My roles have included drum and vocal tracking, session setup, patching, and technical coordination for artists such as Hati, Emily Chen, Pap Smear & The Mammograms, and THE IPES.
I’ve also contributed to live event production and content creation — filming and photographing sessions, documenting behind-the-scenes processes, and supporting promotional rollouts. These experiences taught me how to balance creativity with efficiency, adapt under pressure, and communicate clearly across teams.
What I've Learned
Working with Vermilion Records this semester has been one of the most valuable parts of my creative development. It taught me how to balance technical precision with human connection — from leading drum sessions and problem-solving under pressure to supporting artists in unfamiliar studio settings.
I’ve learned that collaboration is about more than skill; it’s about awareness, adaptability, and communication. Whether I’m behind the kit, at the desk, or behind the lens, my goal is always the same — to make people feel comfortable enough to perform their best work. These experiences have shaped not only my workflow but my identity as a creative who values authenticity and trust as much as sound and image.
